“The international coaching staff of pro coaches at our Las Vegas exposure event is something that we are super proud of, as it adds to the experience and value for the players that participate in our Showcase. Being seen and coached by pro coaches means so much more!” says Scorers 1st founder Gerrit Kersten-Thiele.

Here is a quick Q&A with Hrafn:

Q: What do you look for when you scout players?
A: There are many attributes that a coach has to take into account when evaluating players.  Obviously a lot of it has to do with how the domestic roster is looking for the coming season at that time.  Speaking for me personally I coach a team with considerable depth so the player I would need has to have a blend of good tactical knowledge, unselfishness but at the same time have the skillset needed to command the ball and become the go-to scorer when needed at the end of games.
Q: How much does it mean/help to be able to scout a player live and in person?
A: It´s so important because it makes it possible to get a good idea of the player´s character on and off the court.  Being a professional player overseas can be challenging to young players so strong personalities are needed.  Also, it´s very important that the import players are a good example to other players on their teams who perhaps are not even getting paid for showing up for practices on a daily basis.  The paid professionals have to show up for every practice, display great attitude and work the hardest every minute of every session.
Q: What’s your philosophy as a coach in 5 sentences  ?
A: Not sure if I can put it as such into 5 sentences.  Basketball wise I like for my teams to move the ball quickly, often after pick&roll situations to get the best shot available.  I also am a man to man coach primarly in terms of defense although special circumstances might force the team to do something special occasionally.  In terms of man management I feel it is important to treat every player the same regardless of their role within the team and make sure that everyone has complete knowledge of our rules on the court as far as tactics is concerned and also off the court as they are the club´s ambassadors everywhere they go.
Q: What is the biggest difference between college and pro basketball in your opinion?
A: I feel the biggest difference is possibly the longer shot-clock in US College basketball.  It allows teams to slow the pace of the game down and use a lot of time to get the ball to the preferred options in their offense.  In Europe you have to make your decisions quicker, get the ball in play earlier etc.
Q: Please tell us a bit about your club and the league you play in.
A: I coach a team named Stjarnan Basketball Club in the top league here in Iceland.  The club is relatively young in Iceland but has made a name for itself for the progress made the last few years.  Although the club has not won the League title yet it has a few Cup Wins and routinely places in the top half of the league over here.
Q: Anything else you would like to share or add?
A: Just how excited I am to come to Las Vegas for the first time and participate in this great event that Scorers 1st has created!
