Here is a quick Q&A with Sebastian Machowski on what he is looking forward to in Las Vegas this upcoming July:
Q: What do you look for when you scout players?
A: For every position we have a detailed profile. Prior to the process all skills, all qualities we are looking for in a player have been identified for our group responsible to scout (head coach, assistant coach, general manager).
On top of the common statistical benchmarks we are looking for intangibles, such as communication on the court, behavior, body language etc.
“Decision making” maybe has become the most important aspect for me, since the talent and other profile requirements have to be a given.
Q: How much does it mean/help to be able to scout a player live and in person?
A: Personally I believe it is a big difference when you get to watch a player live. The impressions you get are much stronger live, whereas video let’s you check more in depth the tactical and technical details.
Obviously a face to face conversation beats a phone call any day for an important first impression of the person as well.
Q: What is the biggest difference between college and pro basketball in your opinion?
A: The rules are somewhat different in Europe, especially the shorter shot clock, as well as the more physical style of play.
Q: Please tell us a bit about your club and the league you play in.
A: For the second season I have been coaching Eisbaeren Bremerhaven in Germany’s top division BBL. We want to be a contender for the playoffs in this very tough league.
The BBL (18 clubs) has been getting stronger year by year, and with the exception maybe of the top three teams every team can really beat any team. The style of play is quite physical and mostly uptempo. Each team can have up to six foreign players.
Q: Anything else you would like to share or add?
A: I look forward to being at the Scorers 1st Showcase in Vegas. Getting the chance to work with a few players first hand, and getting to see even more up close during the games is a great opportunity.
The Scorers 1st Showcase returns to Düsseldorf in June 2016.
After being gone for several years we have decided to bring the Scorers 1st Showcase back to Europe this upcoming June.
With the event returning, Scorers 1st will be the only international agency hosting a first class exposure event in Europe for professional basketball players, as well our annual event in Las Vegas (Nevada-USA) during the time of the NBA Summer League.
“Düsseldorf was where we held our first Showcase many years ago. After 3 editions we decided to take the event to Las Vegas and dropped Europe as a location. I think it’s time to revive the event in Europe and make the Scorers 1st Showcase the #1 exposure event for international talent from all over,” said Scorers 1st CEO Gerrit Kersten-Thiele.
“We want to provide players with a great opportunity to be seen by GMs, coaches and scouts from many different markets. It’s also my goal to provide pro teams and their representatives with a top-notch environment to scout players to fill their rosters for the upcoming season.”
Scorers 1st is looking forward to partnering with several agents and agencies from Europe and the US to ensure a great event.
“The Scorers 1st Showcase is open to players from all agencies and we invite all agents to come out as well to support their clients and to network.”
The Scorers 1st Showcase 2016 in Düsseldorf (Germany) will be held on June 11th and 12th 2016.
