Q: What do you look for when you scout players?

A: For every position we have a detailed profile. Prior to the process all skills, all qualities we are looking for in a player have been identified for our group responsible to scout (head coach, assistant coach, general manager).

On top of the common statistical benchmarks we are looking for intangibles, such as communication on the court, behavior, body language etc.
“Decision making” maybe has become the most important aspect for me, since the talent and other profile requirements have to be a given.
Q: How much does it mean/help to be able to scout a player live and in person?

A: Personally I believe it is a big difference when you get to watch a player live. The impressions you get are much stronger live, whereas video let’s you check more in depth the tactical and technical details.

Obviously a face to face conversation beats a phone call any day for an important first impression of the person as well.
Q: What is the biggest difference between college and pro basketball in your opinion?
A: The rules are somewhat different in Europe, especially the shorter shot clock, as well as the more physical style of play.
Q: Please tell us a bit about your club and the league you play in.

A: For the second season I have been coaching Eisbaeren Bremerhaven in Germany’s top division BBL. We want to be a contender for the playoffs in this very tough league.

The BBL (18 clubs) has been getting stronger year by year, and with the exception maybe of the top three teams every team can really beat any team. The style of play is quite physical and mostly uptempo. Each team can have up to six foreign players.
Q: Anything else you would like to share or add?
A: I look forward to being at the Scorers 1st Showcase in Vegas. Getting the chance to work with a few players first hand, and getting to see even more up close during the games is a great opportunity.
