After announcing Phoenix Hagen Head-Coach Kevin Magdowski last week as our first coach for one of the teams at the Scorers 1st Showcase in Las Vegas this upcoming July we are excited to welcome Pete Strobl to our coaching staff!
Pete Strobl is an Assistant-Coach with German BBL team ratiopharm Ulm and will be the Head-Coach for one of the teams at the Scorers 1st Showcase 2018.
“The experience that Pete brings is super valuable for players attending, as he combines a unique understanding of what players go through and what the pro game is like from different angles. Having played professionally himself, having and still training players individually at his training program in Pittsburgh (PA) “The Scoring Factory” every summer and now coaching professionally with ratiopharm Ulm he is a tremendous resource that the players at the Scorers 1st Showcase can and should take advantage of.” says Scorers 1st founder Gerrit Kersten-Thiele.
Here is a quick Q&A with Pete Strobl (who also wrote a very insightful book about his pro career – link to Kindle edition):
Q: You have been to Las Vegas several times already – what’s the upside for a coach to see players live at the Scorers 1st Showcase and what are you looking forward to?
A: It’s crucial to see a player live and in person. Not only to physically confirm what we already know from video and statistics, but to get a chance to read their body language. The season is Europe is long and it’s important for coaches to know what type of person they’re bringing into their team environment.
Q: What do you look for when you scout potential players for your pro team?
A: Like every other coach on earth, we look for talented players that can impact the game. Every position is different, but we need difference makers and players with something special. The challenge is to take all of the different pieces of the puzzle and help shape them into a unified group. We’re looking for talented guys with great attitudes that love to work.
Q: Do you have any tips for players prior to the Scorers 1st Showcase?
A: Players should make sure they’re mentally and physically prepared. Something simple like being in great shape so they can physically compete and exert full energy on every play will leave a lasting impression. Mentally they should prepare to be judged and know that they have to carry themselves like a true professional at all times, because you never know who is watching.
Q: Please give us a little bit of background about your coaching career so far:
A: After playing 9 seasons in Europe, I founded The Scoring Factory in 2009 and spent years helping players develop and climb the ladder. I’m now coaching in Germany for ratiopharm ulm of the German Bundesliga.
