National Team Head-Coach of Denmark Pieti Poikola joins Scorers 1st Showcase Coaching Staff

Düsseldorf – March 21st 2016 –

We are excited to announce the addition of Pieti Poikola to the coaching staff for our Scorers 1st Showcase in Düsseldorf (Germany) on June 18th and 19th 2016 who joins Bogdan Karaicic (Head-Coach of FOG Naestved in Denmark) and Adnan Chuk (Head-Coach of Norrköping in Sweden). Poikola is currently leading the National Team of Denmark with the goal to secure a spot for the Eurobasket 2017 and he is looking forward to the 2016-17 as he joins Korisliiga club Kouvot for this upcoming year.

Here is a quick Q&A with Pieti Poikola:

Q: Can you give us a little overview of your past years and what’s next for you?

I have coached six seasons at Tampereen Pyrintö in Finland Korisliiga. In those years we have won the title three times. Now I’m taking a year off from club coaching. At the moment I’m focusing on the next summer with the National Team of Denmark. This will be my 4th season in Denmark. Our goal is to beat the odds and secure our spot to Eurobasket 2017. Before Denmark I have coached several seasons in Finnish junior national teams with all age groups from U16 to Universiade team.

Q: What do you expect from the Scorers 1st Showcase in Düsseldorf?

I expect to see talented players giving 100 % effort. Ideally I will see some potential players to sign to my next season Korisliiga team Kouvot. This gives me the chance to meet players personally. It’s good to follow the participants with a different eye after knowing more than their seasonal statlines. It’s also great to meet fellow coaches and share opinions with them.

Q: What are the biggest challenges in putting a team together and how can the Scorers 1st Showcase help?

Obviously the biggest challenge is to teach the concept in limited time to players who you don’t know beforehand. It’s not only about offensive and defensive concepts but team chemistry too. It demands good recruiting.

In the next season I will start with the new team so the concept and my philosophy is new for the whole group. Therefore I would like to have players from who I know that can learn things fast and are suitable to my philosophy as a whole. This camp might help to find such players.

Personally after one  club season of, it’s good to have time in the gym to be ready for the next national team summer in Denmark.

Q: Anything else you would like to share/add?

In this business it’s very important to have good network. This camp is part of creating relations with coaches, agents and players who you haven’t met personally before. I’m looking forward the experience.
