We are happy to have Chris Gillett of Danish D1 team FOG Naestved with us again in Las Vegas for the Scorers 1st Showcase 2018 in July on the campus of UNLV.
“This will be that 3rd time that Chris is with us and we are happy to have him on our coaching staff again. His energy, drive and willingness to help players learn more about the pro game overseas is something that we truly value a lot.” says Scorers 1st founder Gerrit Kersten-Thiele.
Below is a quick Q&A with Chris:
Q: With you having been at the Scorers 1st Showcase and the NBA Summer League before – what’s the upside for a coach to see players live at the Scorers 1st Showcase and what are you looking forward to?
A: With this being my 3rd year coaching in the Scorers 1st Showcase, it has given me the opportunity to coach a wide array of players. It is easy to be fooled by a players statistics or measurements, but coaching a player for multiple days in a row is the most valuable tool possible because it allows you to gauge the character and interactions with teammates in stressful situations.
Q: What do you look for when you scout potential players for your pro team?
A: We have always tried to keep things as simple as possible. College or past professional production and shooting percentages are the first thing we look at. Once we’ve narrowed the list from there, the 3 most important things to my own scouting are 1) Length 2) Shooting Ability and 3) Character. Give me those three and lets build from that.
Q: Do you have any tips for players prior to the Scorers 1st Showcase?
A: My biggest tip for players at the Scorers 1st Showcase is to be engaging verbally with your coaches and teammates. I can find 50 players that averaged good numbers, but finding the great teammate or on-court leader is the key to success at the pro level and can make you irreplaceable.
Q: Anything else you would like to add?
A: For all players participating in the Scorers 1st Showcase…Some coaches/agents may be inside the gym watching for 10 minutes only before they move on. Find a way to always be making an impact (Other than scoring).
