Mike is currently the Head-Coach of Austrian top-league team WBC Wels which he led to the Austrian Finals series during the 2015-16 campaign.

Meet Coach Mike Coffin in the Q&A below:

Q: What are you looking for when you scout players and how can the Scorers 1st Showcase help with that?

A: I’m looking for players first that are committed to working hard and working within a team concept. Also players with good attitudes. The last thing I’m interested in is if the player is selfish or able to use his abilities within a team

Q: Why did you decide to coach a team at the Scorers 1st Showcase and what can players expect from you?

A:  I chose to come here because I’ve never participated in a showcase either as a player or coach. Looking maybe for that “diamond in the rough”. They can expect a coach who demands defense with freedom on the offense.

Q: You have had a very successful year with WBC Wels in the Austrian Top-League making it to the Finals – what were the key parts for your team to make it that far and come together?
A: We had a very tough start. We had to change about 4 players then we had to deal with some injuries. Once we got somewhat healthy and started to believe in each other and the system it all turned around. Went from last midway thru the season to finishing 2nd!
Q: What are the biggest adjustments that players have to make/get used to when going from the US to Europe?
A:   I think the biggest adjustment is the culture shock depending on the city you end up in.  with Internet and all the texting Skype etc it’s a bit easier from 20 years ago. I think the practice level is tougher than college also. Many guys have stated they have never worked this hard before.
Q: Anything else you would like to add?
A: Other advice is if it’s your first job don’t worry about the money. Go for the experience and the start. The money will come with your hard work and success.
