2016-17 okapi Aalstar Head-Coach Steve Ibens completes Las Vegas coaching staff

June 5th 2016 – Las Vegas

SteveIbensWe are happy to announce the addition of Belgian Coach Steve Ibens to the coaching staff for our Scorers 1st Showcase in Las Vegas on July 13th and 14th during the time of the NBA Summer League right next to where our event will take place.

Steve Ibens will take over the reigns at Belgian Top-League team okapi Aalstar for the 2016-17 season after Brad Dean has decided to return to the US.

Here is a quick Q&A to get to know Steve a little bit prior to our Showcase:

Q: What are you looking for when you scout players and how can the Scorers 1st Showcase help with that?

A: When I scout players I look for team players with individual talent. Players who are thinking team first. Positive bodylanguage is very important for me and how does a player respond on remarks from the coach. Does he run back hard on defense after a mistake, how does he react when he comes to the bench. I look also if he plays hard in defense, does he put pressure on the ball, does he help his teammates in the rotation. Offensively I look to his scoring ability his passing skills and basket IQ to make good descisions on the court.

Q: Why did you decide to coach a team at the Scorers 1st Showcase and what can players expect from you?

A: I love the challenge to coach at the Scorers 1st Showcase. It was an honor for me that I got the invitation to come to Las Vegas to coach one of the teams. I will bring quick and attractive basketball with my team. An uptempo game with transition shooting and inside game on the 5-5 half court. Playing hard defense to break out quick and play fast break. Players have to play with confidence and have to make good descisions for the team. I also love to win off course.

Q: You have had a very successful year with okapi Aalstar in the Belgian Top-League making it to the Finals – what were the key parts for your team to make it that far and come together?

A: The friendship between the players is huge they really play well together. We have a really good PG and center who can both dominate in 1-1 situations. We play very hard in defense and have a 10 player rotation which helps us in each play-off series. We try to play quick and take a lot of 3pt shots also in transition. When we shoot on high % from the 3p line we are hard to beat.

Q: What’s the biggest adjustments that players have to make/get used to when going from the US to Europe?

A: The biggest difference between Europe and USA is that in Europe there is more focus on team play and sharing the ball, attacking close outs and try to play with 1 our 2 dribbles and decide to pass, shoot or dribble. In the USA the game is more based on isolation plays because the players have so much individual skills and talent. There is more dribbling and less team play. In Europe there is more weakside recognition out off ball screen actions.
